Joana Chicau [PT] is a designer, with a background in performance - classical ballet and contemporary dance. In her practice she investigates the possible connections between – and coexistence of – choreography and media design, aiming to open the possibilities for new aesthetic, energetic and social dimensions in design production processes.
In her work she experiments with open source graphic tools, and the combination of programming and choreographic languages. The project has grown into diverse live performances and coding demonstrations of her methodology/ research and recently taken the format of ‘rehearsals’, a temporary stage for experimenting with coding and choreography.
Recently I went to Argentina - Buenos Aires to developed a new ‘choreographic code’ based on the dance genre: Tango. For the Arts Research Symposium I propose to present my project ‘Ways of moving: Tango’ under the themes ‘Creative computing and (live) coding’ / ‘Machine choreography’.

A ‘WebPage in Two Acts’ is a live coding performance/demonstration: an assemblage of audio-visual and graphic experiments combining principles of choreography (post modern choreographic language) with the formal structures of coding (web code/languages, such as JavaScript). The performance structure is divided in two Acts and two Pauses, and comprehends physical movement.
Appearing at:Crafting Sound continues for the second evening, with performances feeding sounds from Sheffield into self-made, archaic systems and machinery, audiovisual live coding with sonic pi, dance choreographed by live coded JavaScript, and the physical clapping out of binary code to build a pure sine wave.
