Bird&Bee is first and foremost a design agency but isn’t afraid to stray from the path into visual arts, inventions, making and performance. We are designers, makers and inventors based at Yellow Arch Studios on Burton Road, Sheffield. We have been making original products and items in Sheffield since 2000 which go out all over the world and add to a strong Sheffield presence. For this collaboration we will create a sense of wonder. Harmony is participatory and engages people of all ages in harmonics, drawing, exploring mathematical concepts with a touch of hypnotic wonderment and would be happy to perform and do a talk/demonstrazione with our marvelous creation.
Harmony is a magical contraption exploring the boundaries between the Universal Laws of Gravity, Friction and Time within a wonderfully hypnotic, aesthetic & creative setting. Time-travelled from 1844, Harmony and its inventor have combined the arcane, the magnificent and the magical into a travelling curio that draws music before your very eyes.
This hypnotic touring curio is built on an exquisite Victorian handcart and travels from show to show in a horse box, educating the laymen in the art of drawing, making and harmonics and the thin veil between Science and Magic. In the vein of Stage Magicians of old, Dr Titus Bee offers, 'demonstraziones', shows, audience participation, an insight into the Mathematics of Music, Arcane Victorian devices and the Art of Science. Individuals are guided in controlling the contraption to produce their very own, highly tuned, musical drawings in a drawing room style environment.
Harmony uses harmonically calibrated pendulums to produce exquisite musical drawings. Harmony delights and hypnotizes all in her wake with her tactile and hypnotic, three-dimensional drawings of music! Taking us back in time, to an era when innovation and invention was at the heart of British society. We invite people to come and build machines and draw music by harnessing the universal powers of gravity, friction and motion. The pendulums are set in motion and the sensory drawings are rendered before your very eyes. Each drawing is as unique as a snowflake or thumbprint and as beautiful.
The energy that the ‘drawer’ puts in to the pendulums, determine the outcome, therefore producing a unique work of musical art every time. Harmony creates a personal, magical moment in time, for the drawer and bystanders. It creates
a charming, hypnotic interlude in any space and leaves participants with a sensory moment, finely tuned and operating at a higher frequency!
An arts-research day symposium, with talks and performances on the theme of Algorithmic and Mechanical Movement, chaired by Thor Magnusson and Chris Kiefer from University of Sussex's Experimental Music Technology Lab, and taking place in the Sheffield Institute of Arts.
The £25 / £12.50 ticket prices are inclusive of all fees, and includes refreshments, lunch and free access to evening performances at the Millennium Gallery.
