In this beginner-friendly, hands-on workshop you'll make and explore ways to (literally) weave electronics into fabric, to make interactive textiles. The workshop will be jointly lead by three leading e-textile artists - Sandra de Berduccy bringing her knowledge of Andean textiles and electronics from her home in Bolivia, Sheffield-based textile artist and researcher Toni Buckby, who is currently working with the V&A museum, and Becky Stewart, creative engineer who lectures at Imperial College London.
In this workshop you will weave small touch sensitive e-textile pieces using mini-looms (designed by Toni Buckby). Weaving fibres and conductive thread to create a fabric sample, you will then have the chance to program your piece to trigger sound and lights, as well as experimenting with electro-chemistry through hand-made dyes. All materials will be provided and the mini-loom is yours to take home - with the option of also purchasing the electronics you use.
No previous knowledge of weaving, programming or electronics is required, though please either bring along a laptop with the Arduino IDE installed, or let us know in advance if you require a computer to be provided.
Please note, if you want to take your creations home after the workshop, please bring £30 to cover the cost price of arduino microcontroller and other electronics.
